Water is the slow killer of buried cable. It enters through a damaged sheath or an unsealed end, travels along the stranded conductor by capillary action, and months later the aluminium oxidises under the XLPE until a fault appears several drums away from the actual damage point. This single core 630mm2 cable closes that path with water swelling tape under the oversheath and sealed conductor ends, so any moisture that does enter is stopped within a few centimetres.
The conductor is stranded aluminium, which keeps a 630mm2 single core run light enough to handle without special lifting gear, while the XLPE wall of 2.4 mm provides a very low capacitance and low dielectric loss. A black HDPE oversheath gives high mechanical toughness, excellent moisture resistance and good chemical resistance to soils with chlorides or sulphates.
Single core large section cable is the standard choice for long feeder runs, transformer connections and duct banks, because one 630mm2 core replaces several smaller parallel cables and removes the derating and balancing problems that parallel sets bring.

Longitudinal water tightness is verified on samples from each production lot, together with conductor resistance, insulation thickness and a 3.5 kV routine voltage test. Sheath integrity is spark tested at 6 kV over the full length so pinholes never leave the plant. As a waterproof single core cable, the 1x630mm2 aluminium conductor can be pulled through long ducts without the moisture tracking that unsealed designs suffer from.
Long single core runs are ordered with the duct route in mind. We record the duct size, the number of bends and the pulling length, then confirm that a 1x630mm2 aluminium core will pass without exceeding the sidewall pressure limit. Water blocking tape, sealed ends and desiccant are standard on every drum, and for river or road crossings we can pre assemble terminations so the cable goes straight into the duct on arrival.
Q: How is the water blocking property tested?
A: A sample length is submerged with one end pressurised, and the distance moisture travels along the conductor is measured; our water swelling tape limits it to a few centimetres.
Q: Can a single core cable be used in a duct alongside other phases?
A: Yes, but single core cables in steel conduit can suffer induced heating, so we recommend non magnetic cleats and a trefoil arrangement, which our engineers will confirm.
Q: Is aluminium conductor suitable for direct burial?
A: It is, provided joints are made with bimetallic lugs and the sheath is not damaged during backfill, which the HDPE layer is designed to survive.
Q: Do you supply the cable with factory made terminations?
A: We can pre assemble heat shrink terminations on request for river crossing and duct pull applications.
Q: Can you pre assemble terminations for a river crossing?
A: Yes, heat shrink terminations are fitted and tested at the factory on request, so the waterproof single core run is sealed before it leaves the plant.
Tell us your route, duct size and water table level, and our engineers will confirm the water blocking design, drum lengths and price for this waterproof single core cable.
